The current rules around face masks and Coronavirus (COVID-19) are changing frequently, but with UK rules now stating that members of the public have to wear masks in public places such as shops and in taxis, and with retail workers now having to wear masks during the working day, it’s important to choose a mask which will provide the maximum protection and comfort.

Face masks and respirators are, of course, still needed in many other commercial settings, and our range is ideal for those needing appropriate face coverings while they work, whether that be in a factory setting or when working with hazardous materials. Shop online for PPE masks with Manutan.

Face mask FAQs

Do face masks work?

Scientists and health experts have conducted studies which prove that face masks are effective in reducing the spread of airborne diseases such as Coronavirus, but they must be used in conjunction with other hygiene practices such as washing your hands and keeping a safe distance from other people where possible. In other, commercial environments, face masks are very effective for protecting people from harmful chemicals, gasses and other hazardous materials.

Do employers have to provide face masks?

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), “Employers must protect workers from injury or harm to health which could happen as a result of work-related activity. This includes taking reasonable steps to protect your workers and others from coronavirus (COVID-19).” However, face coverings do not officially count as PPE (personal protective equipment), and employers do not have to provide face masks if they were not required to before the COVID-19 pandemic. If, however, you work in the healthcare industry, your employer does have to provide appropriate PPE.

What is a respirator?

A respirator is a type of protective face mask which fits snugly to the face, around the mouth and nose particularly, and prevents the inhalation of toxic fumes and other substances. They are used within the medical industry and NHS to protect workers from breathing in virus particles.

Are all types of respirators the same?

No, there are various different types of respirators with varying levels of effectiveness, depending on what you are trying to achieve:

  • Air-purifying Respirators (APRs) filter out particles from the air, such as dust and metal fumes. Other APRs absorb gases and vapours in a cartridge, supplying the purified air to the user. Some examples include particulate respirators, gas masks and chemical cartridge respirators.
  • Supplied-air Respirators (SARs) come with a compressed air tank and supply clean air via an air line to the user. Some examples include airline supplied-air respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus and even full protective body suits.
