Only an egg-timer?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management technique created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals followed by short breaks. Francesco used an egg timer in the shape of a tomato, the Italian word for tomato is pomodoro – hence the name!
How does it work?
You work for 25 minutes followed by a 5 minute break (get coffee or go for a walk). After repeating this 4 times you take a longer break. It is important not to be distracted in the 25 minutes you’re focussing on the task so turn off your email and make sure you colleagues don’t disturb you.
Why 25 minutes?
Our brains need 15 minutes to get focused on a task, each time your get disturbed this starts again. Most people cannot work effectively for longer than 25 minutes – now you understand why this technique is so good. No distraction and maximum effective working!
The 5 steps
- First decide which task you would like to do
- Set an alarm for 25 minutes
- Work on this task until the alarm goes off
- Take a 5 minute break
- After repeating the steps 4 times you take a break for about 15 to 30 minutes.
