How to use a folding workbench

Folding workbenches are great for remote construction sites and DIY projects as they are portable and space-efficient, but you might be wondering what you can use a folding workbench for.

Essentially, a folding workbench is your partner in a project because it gives you an extra set of hands when you need it, holding materials in place and keeping tools within easy reach. For example, if you have a large piece of wood that you need to cut, you can simply secure it to the workbench’s clamp and assemble, cut or sand away!

You may also be looking for something you can lay all of your tools out on. For instance, if your job requires you to visit multiple properties, you may want a folding workbench to keep these close by and in a safe place – the last thing you want is to step on a sharp tool!

In terms of setting up your folding workbench, it will depend on the style you have but you can usually just fold them out with ease and you are just required to make sure that it is stable in its position. Many workbenches will also have height adjustment features so once folded out, you can set it to the right height for the task (this is particularly useful if you’re working with long materials).

What to consider when choosing a folding workbench

If you’re thinking about getting a folding workbench, there are a few things you should consider first:

What material is it?

Check the material of the workbench to ensure that it will be durable and sturdy enough to support your projects. Many folding workbenches will feature wooden or heavy-duty plastic tops with steel legs.

Is it adjustable?

You may need to adjust your workbench depending on the task at hand. If this is the case, you will want to look for workbenches that have height adjustment features (many workbenches will enable the user to adjust the height by around 4 inches).

Is it stable?

It’s a good idea to check if a workbench has non-slip or rubber feet to prevent it from moving when in use. The feet should be wide-set so that the workbench is adequately balanced and safe to use.

What size is it and how much does it weigh?

The size of your workbench can be very important – especially if you’re working with bulky materials. If you’re looking for something that you can transport yourself easily, then you may need to look for lightweight folding workbenches. Many folding workbenches are around 30 pounds or less which makes them suitable for carrying by one person.

What is its weight capacity?

The weight capacity of folding workbenches will vary, so make sure you pick one which can support the weight of your materials. Generally, lightweight workbenches have a load capacity of about 250 pounds (which is more suitable for smaller projects) while heavy-duty workbenches may have a load capacity of approximately 1,000 pounds. You just need to consider what works best for your business.

What type of clamping does it have?

Take a look at the clamping system on a workbench if you need a workbench which can keep pieces of metal and wood secure whilst you cut or sand materials.

Does it have any other extra features?

Compare workbenches to see if any offer additional features which will make your job easier. For example, you may find a folding workbench which has a handle to make transporting it both safer and more manageable.

Benefits of a folding workbench

Here are just a few reasons why folding workbenches could be great for your business:

  • They’re mobile and lightweight– no matter where your business takes you, a folding workbench can come along too! This is why they’re great for construction sites where a workbench is needed on location whilst work is carried out.
  • They’re easy to put up and pack away – simply fold the legs out and ensure that the workbench is level, you can then collapse it when not in use.
  • You can get heavy duty folding workbenches to support the weight of your tools and materials.
  • They‘re space efficient  – if you’re short on space, folding workbenches are ideal because you can neatly store them away when not in use, ensuring that you have enough clear space to carry out other important tasks.
