Your Mask Questions Answered

Last modified date

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the wearing of face masks has become mandatory in many public areas.

Here, we attempt to answer some of the common mask questions we’ve seen.

Can a mask be reused?

There are a lot of face masks on the market, but each type should state whether they are disposable or reusable. A disposable mask should only be used once and not reused – it should also be thrown away if it becomes damp. A reusable mask should have its own instructions on how to clean it.  The current advice is to wash this type of mask regularly, and that they can go in with your other laundry; a hot wash at 60 degrees or higher is recommended.

How should a mask be worn?

This will depend on the mask, but for most, the instructions are the same: first, wash your hands. Then, it is good practice to check whether there are any holes or tears in the mask. Finally, by using the earloops, the mask should be pulled over the nose and mouth. You should not touch the mask itself other than to mould the mask over your nose. In most cases, the mask will have a coloured side that should face outward, and a filtered side that rests against the face.

How should a mask fit?

A mask should cover both your mouth and nose, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is necessary to minimize any gaps between your mask and face to reduce the risk. The mask should be made of a breathable material, so should not be too uncomfortable – if it is uncomfortable, the mask may be too tight.

It may be necessary to buy a larger mask and adjust the ear loops to fit it correctly. Just remember to avoid touching the mask material as much as possible.

How should a mask be stored?

Disposable masks should be thrown away after use, but reusable ones can be stored in Tupperware or similar boxes. Just make sure they are completely dry after being washed.

Is a face mask or visor better?

When it comes to the spread of COVID-19, current evidence suggests that a face mask is superior to a visor. A visor leaves gaps between itself and a wearer’s face – this allows the wearer to still inhale or exhale unfiltered moisture. A properly fitted mask will have far fewer gaps between itself and the face of the wearer, dramatically cutting down on the chance of spreading COVID-19.

However, it is worth noting that current UK government advice does not recommend face masks over visors.

Are mask filters washable?

The bottom line is that masks are not washable unless stated by the manufacturer. The most common type of mask is the disposable mask, which should only be used once.

Will a mask cause acne?

Occasionally dubbed as ‘maskne‘ the constant rubbing of material against the skin can cause facial acne. Furthermore, as masks are designed to limit airflow, they can also trap moisture, oils and skin cells. If a mask is too tight a fit and worn for long periods, it could rub against the skin and clog pores also. This situation can be avoided by a) rigorous skin routine and b) choosing a face mask that covers your nose and mouth without being too tight.
